The pandemic has thrown into high relief some of the longstanding issues surrounding working conditions in meatpacking facilities. John Oliver explains why greater oversight is needed, and how we can go about getting it.

Bloody Hell! I don't live in the US so I am shocked at some of the things they show on TV. Me, I'm happy with nice , calm John Oliver shows.

Hit 'em where it hurts. Lessen your dependence on meat and definitely lower chicken consumption. I'm not selling my conscience to buy cheap meat.

I've been working in a meat department for about 8 years. It's insane to think about the meat industry. Like looking at how much meat we go through in a day, week, month or year. Everything about it is insane

That $15,000 fine is the equivalent of fining a family who makes $100,000 a year all of 3¢ for an infraction. I mean, a toddler could come up with that kind of money by digging through couch cushions and have money left over! Average income in the US is half of that. So rounding up, that’s 2¢. Fines have to hurt to be effective. #PerspectiveIsEverything

I always find it interesting how this topic can cause such a visceral reaction and yet the obvious solution of “just stop eating meat” is dismissed out of hand because...it tastes good so fuck everything else?

The government's response was for Trump to sign an executive order to keep the packing plants open during the pandemic. In 2019 he signed an order to reduce the number of inspectors in pork processing plants and to run the lines with no speed limits. Great guy, that Trump.

This is sadly true, I've worked for Perdue, and my Family currently works for Perdue. An Perdue doesn't care about it's employees even during the pandemic they took minimal safety measures against covid if you want a test for it, it'll be 100 of your pay-checks and if you have covid then your ordered to be at home for 2 weeks which they don't pay. Not to mention the other things that happen.

Poor people in poor areas, people without professional skills and ex inmates have trouble getting jobs -> look how at these bad companies that don't hire those vulnerable people ! The meatpacking industry provides these people with jobs --> they are taking advantage of these poor people ! This is just a dishonest argument. In my country we try to overprotect the "vulnerables" and guess what... 10% of people can't find a job at all

I was a security guard at the largest hog plant in the world, Smithfield Hog Plant in Tar Heel N.C. I was assigned to the main entrance where I was told I couldn’t leave to use the bathroom and if I really had to go bad I had to call the parking lot guard OVER THE RADIO SO EVERYONE KNEW, wait for them to get there and they had to stand at my spot until I was done so that was embarrassing. I told the boss I couldn’t do it anymore and he moved me to 3rd shift parking lot security. I had to patrol the outside and parts of the inside because someone took a crap on the kill floor cooler floor! The kill floor was so hot that the man who was in charge with cutting the pigs heads off with a “jaws of life” type tool wasn’t wearing a shirt. The majority of the employees came from a country where they didn’t have indoor plumbing so they would hardly ever flush or wash their hands! They would defecate on top of the last employees waste and this would clog up the toilets when maintenance tried to flush it making the place smell horrible! Hell I even remember seeing some of the men from the kill floor bring the knives they used to cut their part of the hogs with and hand sharpener‘s outside with them on their breaks! Even though this was in the early 2000’s I can still vividly see them walk back in sharpening their knives and thinking, I’m 19/20 and I’m not even allowed pepper spray! smh Also my ex-boss tried to put me back at my original post so I quit! This is the same man that would constantly say the N word and talk crap about black people but ended up marrying an African American Woman. Wonder what she would think if she knew that!

2 timer sidenzemorph42
Hey vegans! Take note; *this* is how you argue for veganism.
2 timer sidenzemorph42
@james byrne I'm not, but im now considering boycotting the companies mentioned in this video, and any other company doing this to their workers by not buying meat packed in their facilities, which might end up forcing me to, at minimum, a vegetarian diet because better sources of meat(humane family farms, etc.) are almost certain to be more expensive. This is more than any argument specifically for veganism or against meat has accomplished in me.
